Lauren WelleI have always known that I wanted to work with children. When I was a little girl, my Grandmother use to share stories about her teaching experience in a one room schoolhouse in Iowa and read to me her favorite stories. I loved listening to her experiences and soon started surrounding myself with children. I began babysitting at a young age and found that the time I spent with children energized me and was something I could not get enough of.

In May of 2003, I graduated from Radford University with a BA in criminal justice. My hope was to help children in trouble with the law. During my search for employment, I accepted a position at a school for children with severe disabilities in Alexandria, VA. I worked as a one-on-one assistant for a 10 year old with mental retardation and cerebral palsey. During my time there I developed a strong bond with the child I worked with and truly discovered my calling. I decided to move to a bigger environment where I could focus my energy and implement my own ideas regarding special education. In May of 2007 I received my Masters of Education from George Mason University specializing in Early Childhood Special Education.

I have worked as a teacher of preschool special education for four years in Fairfax County, VA and have taken on numerous leadership roles including team leadership, assisting in development of school improvement plans, attending the Professional Learning Community leadership conferences, and serving as preschool chair for the local screening committee to determine children’s needs.
